Academic
Academic Life at Eltham
The academic success of the pupils at Eltham is underpinned by the promotion of a positive work ethic, combined with high expectations.
We aim to work towards the top two grades at GCSE and at A level in the Sixth Form; this enables our pupils to read the degree courses they want, at the universities they wish to attend. The aims of the curriculum are to give each pupil a broad education, especially in the early stages, and to develop the individual's intellectual powers to the best of their ability.
Years 7 to 9 (Lower School) continue with a broad curriculum which enables the boys to choose their GCSE subjects with confidence. The Middle School Years concentrate on the public examinations with IGCSE being taken in some subjects where we believe it provides a better course for our students. Twenty subjects are available at GCSE, and pupils normally take at least ten. The Sixth Form with a choice of twenty-three academic subjects looks towards Higher Education, with the majority of students aiming at selective universities and a good number regularly securing places at Oxford and Cambridge. At all stages we aim to inspire and stretch bright young minds. We believe that the size of the school does matter: Eltham remains small enough for every pupil to feel that he or she has received individual attention.
Eltham's academic departments are responsible for teaching the curriculum to GSCE or A-Level. Departments also play an important role in school life as a large number of the clubs and societies and other extra-curricular activities in the school will be run by a department.
