Chemistry

The Chemistry Department at Eltham College is well-equipped and is housed in 3 modern spacious laboratories that create a positive ambience for learning in students of all ages.

The concepts that underpin Chemistry have been formulated through repeatable and painstaking experimental procedures and student courses in this department reflect the important contribution of skill acquisition through well organised practical work in addition to the theoretical understanding developed at KS3, KS4 and A-level. Wherever possible, students are encouraged to be confident regarding the safe handling of chemicals and to enjoy the spontaneity and excitement that Chemistry can offer.

Chemistry is a core subject at Eltham College and is studied by all students at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4. A healthy number of students continue into the sixth form and Chemistry perennially attracts a high intake of external students joining the school in Year 12. The subject is taught throughout the school by subject specialists who collectively have a wide range of experience and expertise in various fields of Chemistry and allied sciences which are needed when our student expectation is frequently so high. Our wonderful technician, Julia Gregory, supports the staff uncomplainingly throughout their considerable demands on her time and the subject is thriving despite the desertion of the physical sciences seen in some educational sectors.
