Economics and Business Studies

economicsAlthough the two subjects are very different in terms of content our approach to teaching both is identical. Theories and topical issues are introduced; beyond this point students are encouraged to think (and research) for themselves. Ideas will be shared, criticized and developed by the class. Economics and Business Studies sit somewhere between the science and humanity subjects in the Sixth Form. As a result students are challenged and assessed in various different ways. There is no standard lesson or homework. At times, both subjects can be highly technical - students will use mathematical tools and modelling. On other occasions very different approaches will be required. Classes may be devoted to a debate, simulations are used when appropriate, experiments will be carried out, presentations will be made, essays will be written and data responses completed. This variety allows students to develop a broad range of skills that will prove highly transferable to higher education and beyond. In all that we do at Eltham College it is our aim to maintain a high level of academic rigour, whilst making the topics stimulating, relevant and accessible.

The department will whenever possible and useful teach beyond the specification. For example marginal social cost and marginal social benefit analysis is used when teaching the topic of externalities. This is not necessary according to the specification but it is our opinion that this approach consolidates the students' understanding of the topic and will be useful in the examination.

The department seeks to engage students with a variety of relevant extra-curricular activities.  Click here for Economics and Business Studies - beyond the curriculum
