Physics

In Year 7 and Year 8, pupils are introduced to a wide spectrum of physics, touching on forces, energy, electricity, the solar system and more. The course is rich in practical work and aims to nurture the boys' enthusiasm for the subject.

From Year 9 through to Year 11, the boys build on some familiar ideas and also meet a number of new concepts. Most of the boys study the IGCSE, although a small number do transfer to the dual award in Year 10. The IGCSE is a challenging but interesting course and an ideal foundation for A Level.

In the Sixth Form there are currently five teaching groups and numbers of both boys and girls are very healthy. The A Level syllabus contains a great deal of interesting and relevant physics, and provides an excellent platform for a variety of degrees.

The Physics department at Eltham enjoys three dedicated and well-equipped laboratories, all of which have interactive whiteboards.

We are keen to explore physics outside the laboratory too with visits to Thorpe Park for Year 7 and the Lower Sixth, Greenwich Observatory for Year 8, and CERN in Geneva for the Upper Sixth.  These are now regular fixtures, with more in the pipeline. We have also enjoyed a lecture from McLaren F1 Racing.
