Growing vegetables for Community Service

commservplot

In September 2008 a group of boys in the Lower Sixth (James Goodger, Sean Fisher, Callum Murray, Stephen Middleton and Anthony Poupard) volunteered to start develop the Community Service Plot which is situated behind the Sports Hall.  The boys proved to be very willing and put in a good deal of back-breaking work to remove the grass and dig the ground.  Head Groundsman Tony Timms was also a great support.  Over the next few days topsoil and manure arrived in vast quantities and they were able to start planting after putting railway sleepers round the plot as edging.  They researched how to plant the vegetables and managed to produce good crops of new potatoes, carrots and beetroot which were gratefully received by the cook at Fairmont.  The boys really enjoyed the venture and now have gardening skills for life.
