About the Junior School

In our Junior School there are approximately 200 boys between the ages of 7 and 11 years.
The Junior School is an integral part of the whole school, with its own Head - Mr Keith John - who is responsible for the day-to-day running of the school. Although part of the whole school, the Junior School (Y3-Y6) retains its own identity, thus enabling each boy to feel part of a smaller unit and to have a sense of identity and belonging. Each boy is definitely treated as an individual.
All the Junior School staff are qualified and specialists in the education of the primary age group. The Junior School is normally made up of eight classes with two forms in each year group. Form Tutors are the core of the pastoral care system. Teachers' specialist skills are used to deliver a dynamic and stimulating curriculum.
Whilst the curriculum comprises a broad range of academic subjects, it is quite unique in its recent introduction of Mandarin - as the modern language studied by all; beginning the study of this language at the earliest possible age overcomes many of the inhibitions that pupils face at a later stage, and our proposed links with schools in China help promote a greater mutual understanding and allows us to challenge the perceptions of a Euro-centric world.
Extra-curricular activity is wide-ranging; as well as team sports in cricket, football, hockey, rugby, tennis, athletics and swimming, pupils are given opportunities to enjoy basketball, fencing, judo, chess and elocution. The Music Project run in Years 3 and 4 provides free lessons to all pupils on a wide range of instruments, resulting in over two-thirds of the school participating in different ensembles. The Choir is also very well supported and participates regularly in local music festivals. Drama is equally popular with the boys, who gain confidence to perform, not least in the memorable annual school play.
