ECO Environmental Day

Friday 25th June was ECO Day at Eltham College - our first. A wide range of environmental activities took place, many of them planned and organised by pupils.
These included:
- Pupils (and staff) were encouraged to come to school in a 'green' way. This was a form competition in which 10MMM won the 'greenest' form award.
- We had a speaker from Veolia Environmental Services in Chapel to talk about recycling.
- The 'Carbon Gym' visited from Global Action Plan (an Environmental Charity). This was an environmental workshop using exercise bikes etc. to deliver 'the carbon emissions' message.
- Jenni Wiggle from Global Action Plan delivered a lecture to Year 7-10 about the Amazon Rainforest and how their purchasing decisions can help to protect it.
- Year 8 carried out an environmental survey of the school grounds (Biology).
- Year 9 carried out solar power experiments (Physics).
- Other environmentally themed lessons took place.
- Form 7JMM visited a sustainable community in Mitcham.
- The plastic bottle greenhouse was finished, onions and beans were picked from the allotment and the shed was sanded and painted green.
It was ECO Day at the Junior School as well - see separate article.
The results were impressive - a reduction of 36% in energy use. See Report on ECO Day.
