Supporting Habitat for Humanity
In 1976 Habitat for Humanity was founded with the sole aim of tackling poverty housing on a global scale. Poverty housing damages people's lives in so many ways. It affects people's health and well-being; their children's education; their employment prospects. But most of all, poverty housing traps people in poverty and robs them of hope and opportunity. More than thirty years later HFH is working in 90 countries around the world and has built 300,000 homes in partnership with people in need of safe, decent housing.
Nine students and Mr & Mrs Head-Rapson headed off to Nairobi on Saturday 19th July. On arrival they were met by Caroline and Simon, the Habitat for Humanity (HFH) team leaders. The same day they drove 250km north to Runyenjes (between Embu and Meru). The following day they started work on one of 5 house sites. Over the next 10 days they dug foundations, laid concrete slabs, crushed rocks and built both brick and wooden walls. The students worked enthusiastically and with good humour.
On the last day they attended a Dedication service at one of the houses in progress. The trip was completed with a couple of days in Shaba Game Reserve.
