College Society
College Society has been the flagship society in school life since it was founded by Anthony Earl, former Head of Modern Languages, over 35 years ago. It has embodied the essence of what an Eltham College education should be: intellectually challenging, engaging, eclectic and entertaining.
Over the course of the Autumn and Spring terms Sixth Formers and Year 11 pupils are invited to attend eight presentations by guest speakers, with the aim of broadening their experience of "Life" beyond Eltham College and the confines of A-level syllabuses. Recent topics have included trekking across deserts by camel, the inquiry into the Lockerbie disaster, the shipping forecast and hypnotism and we are always looking for new and exciting speakers. A typical evening begins at 7pm with drinks in Central Hall. The lecture normally begins at 7.30pm and is followed by a light buffet where students can discuss the topic of the evening in an informal manner. Most evenings end at 10pm.
A particular strength of the Society's events is that they are run by a committee of Sixth Formers and everyone is welcome: pupils, parents, friends and staff, and with average audiences reaching 50+ the Society is in good health.
