Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme
Eltham College has a thriving programme of involvement with the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. At present 194 pupils in total are taking part in the scheme. 42 in Year 11 have signed up for Silver and started all sections other than the expedition. 81 are on Silver in the Lower Sixth, 65 in the Upper Sixth and 6 are doing Gold in the Upper Sixth as well.
We are an independent Operating Authority within the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme and pupils entering Year 10 onwards may start the awards at Silver level. From now on, all pupils entering the Sixth Form will be able to start directly at Gold level so that they can complete their Gold award by the time they leave the school. Participants in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme have to gain expertise in four areas: service to the community, a skill or hobby, physical recreation and expeditions. Many of the school's extra-curricular activities (from Rugby to Language Club) are eligible for inclusion in the Scheme but must take place outside the school timetable. Full training in Campcraft, First Aid, Navigation, the Countryside Code, and wilderness survival is given prior to expeditions. All students take an assessment before they embark on expeditions.
