Spanish Department Cultural Trip to Mexico

After a long but exciting journey, our group of thirty arrived in Mexico City eager to explore the historical centre known as the Zocolo which included visits to the Metropolitan Cathedral, Presidential Palace, a study of the murals by Diego Rivera complimented by a visit to Frida Kahlo museum and the Anthropological Museum of Mexico.
The packed programme included a drive to San Juan Teotihuacán to inspect the awe inspiring pyramids of the Sun and Moon and to wander at the extraordinary temple of Quetzalcoatl. Pupils then enjoyed a typical Mexican lunch along the Aztec man-made canals at Xochimilco, whilst serenaded by a Mariachi band.
After an early wake up call we travelled down to Cuernavaca, the City of Eternal Spring to visit the continent's oldest cathedral before exploring the impressive abandoned Aztec city of Xochicalco and then onto the vast network of caves in Cacahuamilpa, which were discovered as recently as 1992.
The programme also included a rugged drive across the mountains of the Sierra Madre, pausing to marvel at the smoking volcano known as Popocatepetl, and then on to the silver mining town of Taxco (many pupils purchased gifts for their families).
The heat and the dust of the Sierra Madre was softened by the ever approaching warm pacific waters of Acapulco and the chance to see the death defying divers show, plunging down a 130ft steep drop against jagged cliffs at dusk!
It was an incredible and unforgettable experience for our pupils - with many reluctant to leave the warmth and sunshine of the Pacific shores - and it is one which we hope to repeat......Viva Mexico.
