Community Service

Not only does Eltham have a long tradition of pupils travelling to distant shores our students are also encouraged to spend time in the local community.
The Community Service Programme is a compulsory element in every Sixth Former's career; students are placed within local Primary and Nursery Schools or with charities and 'pop-in' groups for the sick and elderly. Recently added elements within Community Service include peer-mentoring GCSE students at the local Academy, training choirs at local Primary Schools and growing vegetables on the school's allotment. Not only do they learn a lot about themselves and the world outside the 'cloistered walls' of Eltham College, but also they discover the joy of being able to help others. Many use this as a springboard for a GAP year, working within communities in Britain or remoter parts of the world.
Each year over 100 senior citizens attend the annual Community Service Summer Party in the marquee. They are entertained by a group of Lower Sixth musicians who put together a diverse concert ranging from a classical quartet to a jazz trio and some solo singing. Meanwhile, other pupils prepare and serve tea after the concert.
