Governors

The Governing Body consists of a maximum of twelve elected Trust Governors, one Governor nominated by the Baptist Missionary Society, one by the Council for World Mission, one by the United Reformed Church, two parent nominated and one teacher nominated Governor, one Governor nominated by each of the London Boroughs of Bexley and Bromley.


Nigel Betts 2BETTS, Nigel: (Nominated Governor from Bexley LEA in 1993; Strategy and Planning Committee) is widowed, with a grown up family (of whom step-son Robert is an OE) and works in the field of computer security. Elected member of Bexley Council from 1974-1986, and 1990-present; Chairman of Council's Libraries, Youth and Further Education Committee variously between 1978 and 2001 and in 2001-2002 Chairman of Education Review Committee. Current Chairman of General Purposes Committee. Deputy Mayor 1999-2000 and Mayor 2007-2008. Other interests - Chairman of the East Wickham & Welling War Memorial Trust 1992 to present; Falconwood Community Centre Joint Management Committee (Chairman 1974-1986, and Hon General Secretary 1987 - present), Scout Association (District Chairman East Wickham & Welling 1985-1999); Greater London Reserve Forces and Cadet Association (Bexley's Representative variously between 1976 and present).

blythBLYTH, Richard: (Nominated Governor for the Baptist Missionary Society in 1998). OE (1964-71) and then studied Biology at Bristol University and Theology at London Bible College; Teacher of Science and Biology at Chislehurst & Sidcup Grammar (1976-79), and Eltham College (1979-84, 2000, and on a temporary basis 2001-3); Pastor and Minister at Hither Green Baptist Church (1986-2006); currently Minister at Zion Baptist Church, Cambridge; Chairman of Lewisham SACRE (Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education) and Co-Chairman of LEAP (Lewisham Evangelical Action Partnership). Married to Rachel, with daughter Joanna (21) and Matthew (18).

CareyCAREY, Barry: (Trust Governor, and Vice Chairman of Finance & General Purposes Committee) Managing Director of Tribal MJP (Chartered Surveyors and Planning Consultants); He is a Chartered Surveyor specialising in asset management, strategic investment, and development advice, utilising his background in agency valuations and rent reviews, as well as land acquisition and sales, and liaising with town planning directors. Married to Pam, with three sons, Robert, John and Peter and daughter Julia, all of whom are OEs.

CharlickCHARLICK, Simon: (Trust Governor from 2005, Chairman of Finance & General Purposes Committee) Simon graduated in economics from Bristol University and after qualifying as a Chartered Accountant with Price Waterhouse, moved into industry. Initially he spent several years with major PLC's such as Sainsburys and Avis, before becoming Finance Director of a number of private companies in the property, construction and business services sectors. Simon is currently Finance Director of EEF, the manufacturers' association. He is married to Barbara, who was a Parent Governor and PTA Committee Member for a number of years. He has two sons, Tom and James, both now OE's and an elder daughter, Hannah, who attended Bromley High school.

PrueCorpCORP, Prue: (Nominated Governor from the Staff Common Rooms in 2004) Teacher of French and Italian at Kidbrooke School, Cairo American College, and Eltham College (1985-2003); Head of Girls and Community Service, as well as Team Leader for Leavers' Ball; Hon Sec of Independent Schools Community Service Committee. Fund Raiser for JAGS Appeal Committee, London Chorus Sponsorship Committee, Blackheath Halls Management Committee, and Chairman of Goldsmiths Youth Orchestra for many years. Currently Concert Manager for the London Chorus and Deputy Chairman and Trustee of The Conservatoire Blackheath. Also Trustee of Footballs For Fun - a charity helping children in Africa. Events Organiser for various charities, notably The Duke of Edinburgh's Award, Chairman of ECCO. Married to John, with three daughters.

EdwardsEDWARDS, Anne: (Trust Governor in 2005, Strategy & Planning Committee). First female member of Eltham College Sixth Form (Part-time); Member of Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development: working for BAA and then Kings College Hospital. Member of Association of Reflexologists; ITEC in Nutrition. Currently Lady Captain at Chislehurst Golf Club. Married to Andrew (Past OEA President), mother of Michael and Katie (both OEs) and as a result was a member of the PTA, Form Representative, and achieved ECDL at Eltham.

MahoneyMAHONEY, Dennis: (Trust Governor) Dennis began his career in insurance with the North American Division of Price Forbes & Co, moving to the Board of Sedgwick Ltd, and then after completing the PMD course at Harvard Business School became Chairman of Alexander Howden Ltd in 1984. He was elected as the first Chairman of the World Insurance Network, and from 1991 he was the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Aon Limited, as well as Deputy Chairman of the Aon International Executive Committee. He is the immediate past President of the Insurance Institute of London. He is married to Jackie, with three children of whom Christopher is an OE.

Barrie MorganMORGAN, Barrie: (Trust Governor in 2005, Strategy and Planning Committee) After his BSc and then PhD in Geography at Exeter, Barrie lectured in Geography initially at the University of Leeds and then King's College, London. In 1987 he became Director of the International Students Office, and then after his appointment in 1992 as founding Director of External Relations at King's, established the very successful Development Office there. He retired from King's in 2002, and has since been acting as a Higher Education Consultant for the British Council. Barrie is married to Jean, with Tom and Tegwen both OEs.

RogerMorganMORGAN, Roger: (Trust Governor, member of the Finance and General Purposes Committee) After a degree in Modern Languages at New College, Oxford, Roger entered the world of insurance, particularly the Lloyd's Reinsurance Market. He became the Chief Executive Office of Limit Plc, the largest provider of limited liability capital to Lloyd's in 1994, as well as Chairman of Lloyd's Broker Morgan Read and Coleman. He is currently non-executive director of two of Lloyd's syndicates and one reinsurance broker. He is a passionate supporter of cricket and rugby, plays golf regularly, and is married to Rosemary with two children, of whom Richard is an OE.

RosemaryMorganMORGAN, Rosemary: (Trust Governor, Chairman of the Junior School Committee) After teaching in a variety of Primary Schools as a class teacher, English as an Additional Language teacher and as a Special Needs teacher, Rosemary became a visiting lecturer at Roehampton University on the B.Ed programme in 1990. With particular interests in Children's oral development, boys and reading, and students' perceptions of their school experience, she is now a Visiting Lecturer at the School of Education and Training at the University of Greenwich. Married to Roger with two children of whom Richard is an OE.

ChrisMuttukumaruMUTTUKUMARU, Christopher: (Vice Chair of Governors, initially a Parent Governor, now a Trust Governor, Finance & General Purposes Committee, Strategy and Planning Committee, Junior School Committee) Educated at Jesus College Oxford, called to the Bar in 1974, then practising in the chambers of Sir Dingle Foot QC, MP. He then joined the Government Legal Services, working in the Attorney-General's Office, as Secretary to the Scott Inquiry, the Ministry of Defence, and the Department for Culture Media and Sport and at the Department for the Environment, Transport and the Regions. He is currently the Legal Adviser and Legal Services Director at the Department of Transport. Married to Ann, with sons Tim and Nick both OEs.

OramORAM, William: (Trust Governor since 2007, Finance and General Purposes Committee) Bill trained as a chartered accountant with Deloitte in New Zealand before moving to the UK in 1980. In 1983 he joined the insurance broker Alexander Howden which was acquired by Aon in 1996. He has had a number of senior management and board positions in the group in Finance, IT and Operations. He is currently the Group Financial Controller for Aon in the UK. He is married to Michelle with 2 children, of whom William is a current Elthamian.

ChrisRingRING, CHRIS: (Nominated Governor for Bromley Council). After qualifying as a Chartered Accountant with Coopers and Lybrand, Chris moved into Private Client Stockbroking with Scrimgeour Kemp Gee becoming a partner in 1983. He moved to Wise Speke in 1988 to set up the London office and then joined NatWest Stockbrokers in 1996 becoming Managing Director in 1999 and moved to his current role at Shore Capital of Managing Director Private Clients and Investment Management in 2002. He is Chairman of Bromley Cricket Club and sits on the Bromley Council Sports Consultative Panel. He is married to Sally with 2 children including Andrew who is an OE.

robbROBB, Allan: (Nominated Parent Governor Sept 2008) Born and raised in Scotland, educated at Arbroath High School, graduated from Stirling University and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1980. Spent 20 years with KPMG in accountancy and consulting. Following senior roles with First Choice Holidays and Diagonal plc, set up own interim management and management consulting business. Member of Sundridge Park Golf Club and Scotland Supporters club. Rory Robb joined the senior school in 2007. Married to Kathie with three older daughters.

RobbinsROBINS, David: (Trust Governor, Chairman from 2004) After his BSc degree in Economics and International Relations at University College, London, David entered the world of finance first with the Commonwealth Bank in Sydney, and then the overseas department (Japan) of the Bank of England. He continued to develop his knowledge of the Far East with the Stockbroking firms James Capel and then Phillips & Drew. Having been Chief International Economist in London, he then became Head of Research and Senior Manager of UBS Phillips & Drew in Tokyo (1986), and then moved to New York as Managing Director UBS Securities (1988). After a period as Senior Vice President at UBS Zurich, he became Chief Executive Officer of UBS Ltd London, and then Executive Vice President Europe in 1997. He moved to ING Barings in 1998 as Chief Executive Officer, also becoming Chairman in 2000. He currently holds a number of non-executive directorships, but has also focussed his attention on charitable activities since 2001, being Chairman of Trustees of New Philanthropy Capital, and Chairman of the Hackney Empire Ltd. David is married to Jo (who was a stalwart of the Ladies of the Wardrobe for many years), with 3 children of whom Joseph and Tim are OEs.

DavidSkittSKITT, David: Ordained as a minister in the United Reformed Church in 1979, his ministries have included being minister at Reigate Park Church from 1993-2007. David is now Synod Pastor for URC Southern Synod, covering South London, Surrey, Sussex and Kent. Amongst his main duties are the care and pastoral support of ministers, active and retired, and their families. His educational background include active governorship until recently of a number of state schools as well as chairmanship of the Reigate and Redhill YMCA . Whilst in Barnet, he was instrumental in the establishment of a multi-faith chaplaincy at the North London Hospice. His wife, Alison, is a teacher at an independent school. He has two sons, one of whom is Head of Modern Languages at Oxted and the other of whom works for the English Institute of Sport.

SmithSMITH, Stephen: (Trust Governor, Strategy and Planning Committee) Born in India of missionary parents, Stephen came to Eltham College as a boarder aged 10. He read Geography at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, where he also captained the University rugby side. He went on to captain Richmond and Hampshire, and play scrum-half for England and the Barbarians. After teaching at Harrow School for six years, he offered to serve through the London Missionary Society and was sent with his family to a Bengali medium boarding school near Calcutta. He returned seven years later to be Headmaster at Caterham School, where he served for 22 years until his retirement. He was President and then Chairman of the Old Elthamian Association in 2000-2002 and is still a member of the Committee. He is also a member of the Wessex Synod of the United Reformed Church, and serves on several church committees. He is married to Helen with three children.

Terry SparksSPARKS, Rev. Terry: Born and educated in South Africa, Terry obtained a B.Sc. Mechanical Engineering degree at Natal University and worked on the South African gold mines. He trained for missionary work at the London Bible College 1976-79, and served in the Presbyterian Church of Mauritius from 1979-85 and then in the Presbyterian Church of Southern Africa from 1985-2001. He is a past Moderator of the Egoli Presbytery, Johannesburg. He is presently in the United Reformed Church: Hampton Hill/Twickenham from 2001-06, and Bromley, Widmore Road/Lee Green 2006. Terry holds an honours degree in Practical Theology from UNISA and a Masters in Religion and Conflict at St.Mary's University College. Terry is married to the Revd. Pauline Sparks, Minister of Petts Wood URC and they have three daughters, Carolyn, Julia and Cheryl.

IsabelleWortWORT, Isabelle. Elected parent nominated governor in June 2006, member of the Junior School Committee. Born and bred in France, Isabelle completed a Master's degree in English at Orléans University and came to live in the UK in 1985. She taught French and Mathematics. She has served on the Eltham College PTA for 8 years; first as a committee member, then as vice-chairman and finally as chairman. She has been a form representative and co-ordinator since 1998. Isabelle is married to Robert, a chartered surveyor, with 2 sons: Alexander now an OE and Edward, currently in the Sixth Form.
