Expressiveness and creativity
Eltham College is an extremely cultured place with Art, Music and Drama evident at every turn. In an educational world that is increasingly overwhelmed by examinations and assessment, it is essential that all pupils have the opportunity to express themselves creatively and to develop their imaginations. As well as the three creative arts, groups like the Debating Society, the Charities Committee and the College Society, all give pupils the chance to succeed outside the classroom.
Positive Relationships
The pupils' relationship with their teachers is paramount. The academic staff are committed professionals who care at the personal level: they are the source of wisdom and guidance, and promoters of values and respect. Pupils learn best in an encouraging and stimulating atmosphere, and their respect for staff often grows into a genuine friendship. It is also important that demands and expectations are clearly defined - for example, home-work should be completed on time - and we should recognize that pupils learn from both successes and mistakes.
Working together
The partnership between school and home also contributes to the success of all pupils, and central to this is the role of the Form Tutor. Tutors are the first point of contact for parents, and informal communications occur regularly. Written reports reveal that staff really know their pupils, and parents can be confident that their children are being taught by teachers who are interested in them as individuals. We believe that the size of the school does matter: Eltham remains small enough for every pupil to feel valued.
