The Inca Trail
Once again, an intrepid party of staff, pupils and parents from the Eltham College community braved the challenge of the Inca Trail to visit one of the world’s greatest archaeological treasures, the ‘Lost City’ of Macchu Picchu in Peru. The expedition began with a few days staying in Cuzco, the capital city of the Inca Empire, to acclimatise and to visit the famous ruins of Sacsaywaman. From there it was a five-day slog along arguably the world’s most famous trekking path.
This took us up and over the 4,800m (14,800ft) Dead Woman’s Pass before descending at dawn on the fifth day to arrive at the Sun Gate of the Inca city at sunrise. It was foggy! The weather soon cleared and gave the party their ‘picture postcard’ photo opportunities of the ruins, so very familiar to all. There was drama, crisis, physical and mental challenges and some of the most spectacular sights to be seen anywhere in the world on this unforgettable trip. Everyone returned exhausted but with memories that will stay with them for the rest of their lives.
