Old Boy Gets Man of the Match at Varsity Game

Dave Black, Old Elthamian (2001), was finally on the winning side in the 2007 Varsity Rugby League match at the Twickenham Stoop. Dave, a medic who studied first at "that other place" before coming up to Oxford last year, is a winger with quick feet and raw pace and has already played in two varsity matches, one for each side.  The 27th Pcubed Varsity match was a thrilling encounter with the outcome in the balance until the final whistle; Oxford were finally triumphant by 20 points to 14 and so ending Cambridge's two consecutive victories. Oxford were under pressure for the first twenty minutes, with Cambridge dominating both possession and territory but a breakaway move was finished off neatly by Dave to put Oxford on level terms. The match, which was televised on Sky, was played on a very heavy pitch after torrential rain had fallen for most of the day. Strong and gusting winds added to the difficult playing conditions, but ‘Man of the Match’ Dave was tireless in his efforts in both attack and defence and fully deserved to, at last, claim his winner’s medal.
