The Inca Trail
Fifteen Elthamians (pupils, parents & staff) tackled one of the more challenging treks in the world over the Easter Holiday when they followed the legendary Inca Trail into the hidden city of Macchu Picchu, the fabulous mountain-top retreat of the Incas, never found by the Spanish Conquistadors and hidden in the cloud forest until its discovery in 1911. The trail is one of the highest in the world, at 4,200 metres at its highest point (Dead Woman’s Pass), but everyone rose to the challenge magnificently, to be rewarded with a ‘picture postcard’ view of one of the world’s most spectacular archeological sites (and sights). The trip included not only Macchu Picchu, but many other impressive Inca ruins, fantastic views of the Andes mountains, mountain biking and even a bit of Andean horse-riding; everything accompanied by the fresh tones of the pan pipes!
