The Time Machine

Fire, smoke, lasers and explosions galore marked the arrival on the Eltham College stage of The Time Machine, Andrew Hillary’s latest extravaganza of theatrical wizardry, complete with the now-obligatory huge set-piece scenes of chaos and destruction – culminating this year in staging no less an event than the end of the world itself. By a long way the most technically complex play ever staged in the ABH (at the moment!), the visual and auditory experience was best summed up by a parent on leaving the theatre on the first night; “I’m deaf in one ear and still smouldering; what a wonderful show!”

An enthusiastic cast was impressively led by Jonathan Smith playing the Time Traveller, Rian O’Grady as the Morlock King and the three Eloi children played by Ben Brown, Jake Laing and Mark Philpot. They were ably supported by Philip Franklin’s many appearances as Narrator and descendent of the previous characters he had played in earlier scenes, and a large ensemble cast, all of whom had their moment of glory in the spotlight – usually before being killed off! The real star of the show was probably the Time Machine itself, sadly no longer with us as it was too big to store. It has been rendered into matchwood by a cast and crew very relieved to have survived the show!
