During the week beginning 2 October, Year 4 had the opportunity to make their own toothpaste. First, the students learnt about the history of toothpaste. In ancient times people used all sorts of ground-up items, including charcoal, rocks and even urine to ensure they had clean teeth.
In groups, the students had to decide what recipe to follow. Ingredients included: glycerine, baking powder, salt, sugar, flavouring and coconut oil. Mr Cavendish was brave enough to try out each recipe and give it a grade for taste, texture and effectiveness. In the end, the students decided that it did not compare to modern toothpaste but was great fun to make. Mr Laubach’s toothpaste was the worst as he used far too much baking powder which gave his toothpaste a bit of a rancid aftertaste.
