On Tuesday 23 January, Lord Monks (John Stephen Monks) visited our Politics Society to give Sixth Form students a talk on his experience in the House of Lords. Lord Monks took his seat in the House of Lords on 11 October 2010, he is a Labour Co-operative member and was the General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress in the UK from 1993 until 2003, when he became the General Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation.
Lord Monks spoke to the students about: the history of the House of Lords, the role it plays today in Government and the range of debates that happen inside the chamber. He also opened up the floor to the students for a passionate debate about Brexit.
