On Tuesday 6 February, the History and Politics Societies held a joint event to commemorate 100 years of the 1918 Representation of the People Act, which gave some women the right to vote for the first time.
Mr Wearn spoke about the history of the movement and the differences between the Suffragettes and Suffragists. He also spoke about how the more extremist parts of the movement have been glossed over in history. This led to a debate about whether some Suffragettes should be pardoned for their crimes.
Sophie Butcher (Upper Sixth Form) gave a short presentation about why the vote is so important and how it has led to some important legislation today. She also spoke about the legacy of Margaret Thatcher and how women in government are held to a higher standard.
