Over the weekend of the 19 to 20 May, three teams from Eltham College Junior School competed in the National Semi-Finals of the English Primary Schools Chess Competition. All three teams performed very creditably, in particular the Under 9 A team, captained by Roshan Rao, who gained a gold medal and narrowly missed out on a place in the National Final. Two Under 11 teams were competing. The A team won a silver medal and the B team a bronze. It goes without saying that the boys conducted themselves impeccably and played some excellent chess. Special thanks must go to Mr Sam Oliver, the teacher who is in charge of chess within the school, and to the two external coaches, Mr Laurence Ball and Mr Tony Stebbings, for all of their work.

Next year we are aiming to make the national finals!

The teams were:

Under 9 A Earl Bodemah, Alex Chuang, Maxim Demin, Daniel Horgan, Roshan Rao, Robert Welensky

Under 11 A Abhigyan Bagchi, Ankit Gaekwad, Arjun Jadhav, Yash Makhija, Matthew McLoughlin, Yuchen Wu

Under 11 b Aditya Jayaram, Laurence Liu, Arthur Nechyporuk, Samir Patel, Benedict Pagliari, Shiven Shankar
