On Thursday 6 December we were delighted to host our inaugural ‘Applying for Law and Criminology’ Conference. Our most ambitious careers event to date, the afternoon was supported by the University of Leicester and the University of Greenwich, as well as OEs Michael Fiddler (1997), Maktuno Suit (2001), Chris Northway (2007) and Alex Woolcott (2009). Attended by over 125 students and staff from 12 different schools, the wide-ranging programme included two fascinating and thought-provoking taster lectures, delivered by Dr Steve Evans, Associate Professor in Law at the University of Leicester and Michael Fiddler, Senior Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Greenwich.

Students from Year 11 and Sixth Form also heard from OEs Chris Northway, a Corporate and Commercial Solicitor, and Maktuno Suit, a Psychotherapist and Organisational Consultant, who has enjoyed a varied career working within the criminal justice system. Both speakers shared their career journey from Eltham College to their current role, as well as their advice for anyone considering a future career in Law or Criminology. Significantly, this included the importance of networking, with an event such as this providing the students with a great opportunity to do so. The afternoon finished with a carousel of five interactive sessions, during which students had the opportunity to hear from current undergraduates from both universities. They also engaged in discussions around famous case law, and were asked to agree a set of new policies to create their own manifesto.

We understand from the University of Leicester that the conference was the best attended student event they have ever held in London. In fact, there were more students taking part than at any of their campus student taster conferences last year! On the back of this success, we look forward to working with the Universities of Leicester and Greenwich again in the future, both for the benefit of Eltham College students, and those from other local schools.
