Hashim (Upper Sixth) reports:

On Tuesday 28 January, the Eltham College Senior Debating team travelled to Trinity School of John Whitgift to take part in a second round heat of the English Speaking Union’s MACE competition. Speakers in the debate were Upper Sixth students: John, Max and Hashim, while Megan and Nathan in the Lower Sixth, along with Nick in Year 11, shadowed them in preparation for future debates. Eltham College was drawn against Whitgift School and opposed the motion: ‘This house regrets the commercialisation of Pride’. In a high-quality debate against very strong opposition, Eltham debaters were able to successfully make the argument that the commercialisation of Pride had provided holistic benefit and should thus not be regretted. Six teams were present at the round, of which two would go through to the regional finals. Eltham College debaters secured a top two finish and will, therefore, move on to the next stage of the competition which will be the regional finals.
