Junior School students raised money for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) one of the Duke of Edinburgh’s favourite charities during the 1980s and 1990s.
Funds during that time were raised through sponsored walks around the local parks and community. In 1986 the school was awarded the WWF Wetlands Campaign Shield for being the first school in England to raise over £1,000 in a sponsored walk. It was for these fund raising efforts Junior School students were invited in 1993, to the London Commonwealth Institute’s Centenary Celebrations. Students met HM Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Duke of Edinburgh.
The Wetlands Campaign Shield together with over fifteen other shields awarded by the WWF to the school hang in corridors of the Junior School.
Of course, for many years, Eltham College students have also continued to participate in the world-renowned Duke of Edinburgh Award, a scheme that has beneffited so many young people at Eltham and many other schools.
