Year 7 Scholars enjoyed a fascinating talk yesterday about the chemistry of spheres, in particular the work of Harry Kroto in the generation of Buckminsterfullerene (Carbon 60) in1985.
The talk given by Dr Hill from the Eltham College Chemistry Department looked at the so called buckyball molecules which had been theoretically predicted years before but were finally realised in1985.
Dr Hill had used many visual aids in the talk, but the students were puzzled about what might be contained in what appeared to be a large cake box….it was in fact a super large buckyball molecule made of cake!
The lesson forms part of the Scholars Programme which includes workshops and lectures overseen by our Head of Academic Scholarship, Mr Cavendish.
