Mrs Massey, Deputy Head (Pastoral) and Politics specialist, delivered a fascinating insight into Machiavelli the man and his ideas in the final Year 10 Scholars meeting of the term.
After considering the distinction between power and authority, the students weighed up the merits for a leader being feared or loved. They used a wide range of examples from Mrs Thatcher, George Bush Snr to Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, and looked at the way in which Machiavelli’s’ ideas have had an impact well beyond his own age. Very few texts from the16th century are reached for by modern politicians seeking inspiration.
