Translating the untranslatable?
In their final session of the term, Year 8 Scholars enjoyed a challenging and highly informative session led by Head of Spanish Ms Paull on the theme of translation.
Ranging from the humour often generated by the literal translations of idiomatic language, through to the challenges of Wittgenstein, a musical interlude of translated ABBA lyrics and finally why “The cat sat on the mat” doesn’t really work as “Le chat s’est assis sur le tapis” the students began to understand some of the challenges and enjoyment of translation.
To close the session the pupils attempted to rewrite a piece of text without using the letter ‘e’.
