Throughout February, Eltham is set to hold a range of activities across the school to mark LGBT+ History Month. The month-long event was founded by Schools Out, which have been campaigning for LGBT+ inclusive education for 47 years. Each February, communities across the UK come together to increase the visibility of the LGBT+ community, teaching people about the history of related civil rights movements and current matters affecting them.

This year’s theme is Politics In Art: ‘The Arc is Long’, which relates to Dr Martin Luther King Junior’s quotation, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.” The quote reminds us that change can take a long time, but it does happen.

Eltham College’s Pride Society launched today and together with the Equalities Committee they will be providing greater awareness of the issues faced by the LGBT+ community and promote equality and diversity.  There will be some talks during form time and a series of lectures including: ‘The History of Drag’, ‘Symbolism in the work of Keith Haring’, ‘Alexander the Great and Hephaestion’ and ‘Queer History’.

The Library has also set up a display of LGBT+ history and influential figures.
