Glaciers: Fascinating and Fearful

The Year 7 scholars led, on this occasion, by Head of Geography Mrs Mollison have just been examining the fascinating world of glaciers.

Drawing on her own experience of visiting many glaciers, Mrs Mollison explained not only how glaciers were formed but the hugely significant effects they have had in shaping the earth. We may think at the moment of melting ice, rising sea levels and the threat to low lying areas but we already have visible evidence of how glaciers have scoured the landscape like natural bulldozers.

Referring back to sea levels, the students saw a rather chilling prediction of the potential flooding  effects of rising sea levels in the future and gave some sophisticated ideas about what the implications of these changes might be.

The students were developing their understanding of how glaciers fit into the climatic system, whilst at the same time admiring their beauty. By the end of the session they had come to understand why they could exercise a lifelong influence on someone, not least Mrs Mollison!
