The Impact of Technology: Saviour or Slayer
Having watched an extract from a TED talk about the impact of technology, the Year 8 Scholars were led by Ms Jay Muirhead into a broader exploration of this topic.
Using the example of Galileo and his telescope to show how technological advances enabled both a different view of the world and then “world view” the students were asked to reflect on whether technology is, to use the phrase from the Ted Talk, a Saviour or a Slayer?
The students thought about the concept of technological determinism as well as the importance of diversity in technology.
They reflected very maturely about how they might be critical consumers of new technologies.
In a vote at the end of the session, about the same number opted for saviour and slayer, with the majority not quite sure…
