Eltham College Fencers Shine at Kent U16 Competition
This year, the Kent U16 Fencing Competition saw a record number of participants from Eltham College, marking an exciting milestone for our fencing team. Representing the school in multiple categories were Vivienne from Year 9 (épée and sabre), Polina from Year 9 (épée), Mihir from Year 10 (foil and sabre), Lukai from Year 10 (foil and sabre), Hunter from Year 9 (épée and sabre), as well as Gabriel and Zayd from Year 9 (épée).
The competition yielded outstanding results, particularly in sabre, where Vivienne secured an impressive second place. Mihir won gold in a fantastic final against Lukai, a reversal of last year’s outcome when Lukai defeated Mihir on the way to the semifinals. This marks the second consecutive year that the sabre U16 trophy has stayed with Eltham College.
Mihir and Lukai both performed exceptionally well throughout the event, finishing first and second in the group stages and carrying their momentum into the direct elimination rounds to meet in the final. Their outstanding efforts ensured another gold medal for the school.
Vivienne continues to impress with her consistent hard work and dedication since starting fencing in Year 7. Alongside her second-place finish in sabre U16, she achieved a top 8 placement in épée U16 and has shown great promise for future competitions.
This year’s participation numbers were also a highlight, with over double the entries across all weapons compared to last year. While Lukai and Mihir represented the school in sabre U16 and Matthew in épée U16 last year, this year’s growth showcases the expanding enthusiasm for fencing at Eltham.
These achievements build on the success of the Kent Foil Competition (U10, U12, and U14), hosted by Eltham earlier this year. Highlights included:
- U10 Boys and Girls: Sasha and Alisa won gold, with Henry taking silver and Brandon securing bronze.
- U12 Girls: Harriet achieved a bronze medal.
- U14 Girls: Vivienne earned silver.
- U14 Boys: Mihir took silver, and Lukai secured bronze.
Looking ahead, our fencers are preparing for upcoming competitions, with the Public Schools Fencing Competition in March as the main focus. With their dedication and rigorous training, we anticipate more fantastic results to come.
Congratulations to all our fencers on their remarkable achievements – you’ve made us all proud!
