The Ethics of Charity Lecture by British Philosopher David Edmonds
A group of Lower Sixth Formers recently attended a lecture by British Philosopher David Edmonds at Dulwich College. These students had entered the prestigious Erasmus Essay Competition and this lecture on ethics and charity reflected the theme of the competition.
The lecture focussed on the challenge posed by Australian Philosopher Peter Singer many years ago when he argued that if we would rescue a child we saw drowning in a pond, do we not owe a similar duty to those in peril that we do not see. After a fascinating talk followed by a q and a session the prizes were awarded. There were six prizewinners out of a large number of entries, and one Eltham student was placed 7th.
Thanks to Dulwich College, and in particular Dr Neil Croally, for running the competition and hosting our group. The level of engagement by our students and the quality of their answers was highly commendable.
