Eltham College Marks Race Equality Week with a 5-Theme Challenge
This week, workplaces across the UK are recognising Race Equality Week, a time to reflect on race equality and drive meaningful action. At Eltham College, our students are taking part in a 5-Theme Challenge during form time, exploring important discussions around identity, privilege, and inclusion because #EveryActionCounts.
The challenge encourages students to engage with five key themes:
– Intersectionality: Understanding that people have multiple aspects to their identity, such as race, gender, sexuality, and class, which all shape their experiences.
– Recognising Privilege: Acknowledging how privilege, whether based on race, socioeconomic status, or other factors, impacts our daily lives and how we can use it to support others.
– Inclusive Language: Recognising the power of words in fostering respect and belonging for everyone.
– Masking: Exploring the concept of code-switching and how people may change how they speak or behave to fit in.
– The Big Promise: Students will reflect on their own role in creating an inclusive community by writing personal commitments to challenge inequality.
Through this initiative, our students are engaging in meaningful conversations, learning to listen, reflect, and take action towards fostering a community where everyone feels valued, heard, and empowered.
