Year 8 Scholars Explore the Power of Wordsworth’s ‘Stealing the Boat’

The Year 8 Scholars led by Mr Chris Cook were reading and perhaps more importantly visualising “Stealing the Boat”, part of William Wordsworth’s The Prelude. Having listened to a reading of the poem, always an essential element of appreciating it, the pupils then analysed elements of language and structure, reflecting on the romantic elements as well as the concept of the sublime.

They enjoyed detecting the shifts of mood and tone in the poem and were able to accurately pinpoint the way in which this was achieved. This was an engaging session which will encourage not only further reading of the Romantic Poets but also, as Mr Cavendish encouraged, a visit to the Lake District.
