Eltham College Triumphs at the Geological Society Schools Competition
On Tuesday 18 March, four of our talented Year 12 Geography Society students—Ella, Gaby, Utkrit, and Winnie—travelled to The Geological Society in Piccadilly for the national final of the prestigious Geological Society Schools Competition.
After successfully qualifying with their insightful ESRI Storymap website on Coral Reefs, the team competed against schools from across the country in a challenging problem-solving activity. The task required students to make strategic decisions on how best to allocate £40 million to investigate and mine green energy on asteroids, considering the environmental, economic, and technological implications of such a venture.
The competition was judged by leading experts in the field of geology, all of whom hold doctorates in their respective specialisms and have contributed extensively to GeoScience magazine through numerous published research articles. Their expertise in planetary geology, sustainable resource extraction, and environmental impact assessment provided a rigorous and insightful evaluation of the students’ proposals.
Following an intense day of critical thinking, teamwork, and presenting their innovative proposals to the judges, Eltham College emerged victorious, winning first place and securing the title of Geological Society Schools Competition Champions 2025.
This remarkable achievement is a testament to the students’ dedication, creativity, and passion for geography and the geosciences. Congratulations to Ella, Gaby, Utkrit, and Winnie for their outstanding performance!
