Bioasis Residential: Year 7 & 8 Exploration, Conservation, and Connecting with Nature

This year’s Bioasis residential trip was an action-packed week of outdoor learning, environmental projects, and plenty of mud!

Students got hands-on with conservation, clearing the estuary of rubbish in association with Till the Coast is Clear. They also helped remove invasive Rhododendron ponticum, making way for native plants to thrive.

Teamwork came into play with catapult-building and seed bomb launching—mud balls packed with native seeds. There was early-morning canoeing, some impressive archery skills, and crafting—students had a lesson on the uses of nettles, how to handle them safely, and how to turn their fibres into cordage, which they then used to make bracelets.

Wildlife tracking brought more opportunities to observe nature up close. Using camera traps, ink traps, and humane small mammal traps, students were able to study creatures such as voles and mice—carefully caught overnight and released after being identified and discussed during the trapping lesson.

The week ended around a cosy campfire, bringing to a close an unforgettable outdoor adventure.
