Game Theory: Year 8 Scholars Lead a Philosophy Session at the Junior School
A final group of Year 8 Scholars have recently visited the Junior School to lead sessions with the Year 5 pupils on a philosophical theme. 5AA were the latest group to be both entertained and challenged by their Year 8 mentors. The theme of the lesson was an exploration of the question “What is a game?” Using a PowerPoint presentation, worksheets, and small group discussions, the Year 8s led an exciting session in which all the Year 5s were actively engaged.
What quickly became clear was how hard it is to define a game, and the pupils were very good at finding examples that didn’t seem to fit each other’s definitions. The Year 5 pupils dealt with some challenging ideas really well. Not only did the Year 8 students design all the resources, but they also led the session very expertly.
“It was interesting how hard it was to find a definition of a game. For example, Solitaire only has one player.” – Oran (Year 5)
“Lots of people have different opinions about what is fun. It is very subjective.” – Aston (Year 5)
“The Year 8 scholars led a thoughtful and engaging session, showing excellent leadership and communication skills. It is fantastic to see the older pupils taking on the role of mentors so confidently.” – Miss Armstrong
