Geography Department Recognised with National Award
We are delighted to announce that our Geography Department has once again been awarded the GA Secondary Geography Quality Mark, this time with the additional distinction of Centre of Excellence in Networking.
The moderators praised the department as “a tight collective, truly enthusiastic about the subject”, with a clear vision for success. They highlighted the well-planned and inspiring curriculum, including innovative topics such as Why are the Nordics so Happy? and The Geography of Fashion, as well as the commitment to broadening fieldwork opportunities both locally and internationally. Plans to expand the Year 8 Climate Change unit with a focus on “hopeful geographies” and enhanced fieldwork were described as forward-thinking and inspiring.
Particular commendation was given to our extensive fieldwork provision — from local microclimate studies to international trips in Norway and the forthcoming visit to Iceland — as well as the thoughtful support for neurodiverse students, including practical strategies for dyslexic learners. The moderators also praised the department’s strong teacher–student relationships and the way student and parent feedback is used to shape the curriculum. The department’s outreach, including the organisation of the South and East London GA WorldWise Quiz, was recognised as exemplary, particularly for maximising participation by keeping barriers to entry low.
This award is a testament to the passion and dedication of the Geography team, past and present, in inspiring the next generation of geographers.
“It was an honour to receive the award for Centre of Excellence, alongside the renewal of the Quality Mark, in recognition of the excellent teaching and learning that takes place at Eltham College. As Geography is always changing, for example due to global events and environmental challenges, we always seek to ensure our schemes of work are current and relevant for today’s world. It is such an exciting subject to teach and we were delighted that our collective passion received such positive feedback from the Geographical Association. We also look forward to continuing our outreach, whether this be hosting quizzes, leading sessions at conferences or writing articles for geographical publications” – Mrs Mollison, Head of Geography
