Poet Theresa Lola visits Eltham College for National Poetry Day

To celebrate National Poetry Day, Year 7 students were joined by Theresa Lola for a special assembly. Theresa Lola is an award-winning poet and former Young People’s Laureate for London (2019).

During the assembly, Theresa shared her unique journey from earning a degree in Accounting and Finance to later obtaining a master’s degree in Creative Writing and now working as a full-time poet. Her talk highlighted how poetry can extend beyond traditional publishing into areas such as brand writing, live performance, and creative consultancy. Theresa also read selections from her 2024 poetry collection, Ceremony for the Nameless, giving students a glimpse into her work and the themes she explores.

Later in the day, she led workshops with Year 7 and Sixth Form English Literature students, giving students a chance to explore poetry in bold and imaginative ways.
