Year 7 Geographers Design Flag for Antarctica
Year 7 geographers were recently challenged with the optional activity of designing a flag for Antarctica. The activity encouraged them to think about the continent’s unique environment and its importance in global geography and conservation.
A photograph of the finished flag was taken by Hannah Greetham, a Zoological Field Assistant based on Bird Island, a small research station off the north-west tip of South Georgia in the Southern Atlantic Ocean. Bird Island is separated from the South Georgia mainland by a 500-metre channel, Bird Sound, and lies about 1000 km south-east of the Falkland Islands. The island is home to a small team of researchers who spend up to 18 months studying seals, penguins, and albatross. Their work contributes to long-term monitoring of wildlife populations and climate change impacts, an example of a ‘green career’ appropriate for this week’s national Green Careers Week!
Congratulations to Ariana, Nicolas, Aiyaana, Alisa, Brandon, and Zoe in Year 7, whose designs were selected to create the final flag.
