Glaciers: Fascinating and Fearful

Having recently explored topics in history, chemistry and architecture, the Year 7 scholars, led on this occasion by Head of Geography, Mrs Mollison, have been delving into the fascinating world of glaciers.

Drawing on her own experiences of visiting many glaciers, Mrs Mollison explained not only how glaciers are formed but also the profound effects they have had in shaping the Earth. While we may currently think of melting ice, rising sea levels and the threat to low-lying areas, we already have visible evidence of how glaciers have sculpted the landscape like natural bulldozers.

Returning to the topic of sea levels, the students encountered a rather chilling prediction of the potential flooding effects in the future and offered some thoughtful ideas about the wider implications of these changes.

The students were developing their understanding of how glaciers fit into the climatic system, whilst at the same time admiring their beauty. By the end of the session, they had come to appreciate why glaciers could exert a lifelong influence on people, not least Mrs Mollison!
