Martin Weston Modern Languages Award
The Modern Languages Department is delighted to announce the launch of the Martin Weston Modern Languages Award, an exciting new initiative for Lower Sixth students studying Modern Languages.
This award offers students a unique opportunity to spend time during the summer of their Lower Sixth year in a country where a language they are studying for A level is spoken, helping them to deepen their linguistic skills, broaden cultural understanding, and enhance personal and educational development ahead of the Upper Sixth year.
Our thanks to former Elthamian Martin Weston, who studied Modern Languages at Exeter College, Oxford, before moving to Strasbourg, where he served as Head of English Translation at the Court of Human Rights. He has generously endowed a number of travel awards of up to £2,000 for Eltham College Sixth Form linguists, supporting immersive experiences that enrich language learning.
Applications are to be made in writing to Head of Modern Languages, Ms Scarantino, clearly setting out the linguistic, cultural and educational rationale for proposed travel. Shortlisted applicants will then be invited to deliver a presentation in the Lent Term. For more information on how to apply look out for the launch email sent to Lower Sixth linguists, or speak to your subject teacher.
