German Students Explore Film and Language at the BFI
In December, the German Department took sixth-form students to the British Film Institute (BFI) for an immersive and engaging morning exploring the events, people and narratives that marked the end of the Cold War, as depicted in film. The visit concluded with a screening of Good Bye, Lenin!
The session was conducted entirely in German, enabling students to successfully develop their critical film analysis skills while working in the target language.
This experience was followed by another successful visit to the BFI earlier this week with Year 10 German students. During the morning, students watched three short films and took part in a workshop based on them, which was delivered largely in German. In the afternoon, they enjoyed a screening of Almanya, a comedy exploring the experiences of a family who moved from Turkey to Germany and their life between two cultures.
It was inspiring for students to see so many learners of German gathered in one place, and the department looks forward to running similar trips again in the future.
