Year 4 Georgia O’Keeffe Art Workshops
Year 4 pupils recently had an inspiring visit to the Gerald Moore Gallery, taking part in hands-on art workshops celebrating the life and work of Georgia O’Keeffe. The day began with an engaging talk about O’Keeffe, exploring how her surroundings—from the bustling streets of New York to the striking landscapes of New Mexico—shaped her unique artistic vision.
Following the introduction, the students explored the current exhibition, Georgia O’Keeffe: Memories of Drawings, which features 21 photogravures of drawings created by O’Keeffe between 1915 and 1963. The exhibition offered a fascinating glimpse into the evolution of her style and her careful observation of the natural world.
Inspired by the exhibition, the pupils then selected from a variety of natural objects, including shells, seed pods, pine cones, and knots of wood, to create their own still-life arrangements. Guided by gallery staff, they first sketched their compositions in pencil, paying attention to shape, texture, and detail. The activity concluded with the application of watercolour, allowing each pupil to experiment with colour and shading, echoing O’Keeffe’s expressive approach to natural forms.
The workshops offered Year 4 a unique opportunity to connect with art history while exploring their own creativity. By drawing from nature and experimenting with materials, the students experienced firsthand how an artist’s environment can inspire imaginative and beautiful work.
