The End of History?
Members of the Year 10 Athenaeum recently enjoyed an excellent presentation by Mr O’Boyle, Head of History and Politics, on the subject of “The End of History?” Re-examining the claim made by historian Francis Fukuyama at the end of the Cold War, the group considered how far the events of the last 35 years have borne out the idea that the triumph of Western liberal democracy and the end of ideological evolution has been completed. Using a study of recent political developments and looking through the lens of Samuel Huntington’s alternative view of a “Clash of Civilisations,” the students reflected on the merits of these two rival perspectives. Needless to say, the complexities of the modern geopolitical situation often resist any single interpretation.
