Designing the Future

The Year 7 Academic Scholars enjoyed an engaging presentation from the Head of Design Technology, Mr Quinton, which explored the concept of creativity and the nature of design in its many and varied forms. The session also tackled the challenging question of what truly constitutes great design. Students examined a range of design classics, including the Bic biro and some of the UK’s most iconic road signs, and considered how designers draw inspiration from nature through biomimicry. The discussion then moved on to AI-generated design, prompting lively debate. It was particularly interesting to hear about the students’ current use of AI, which led to thoughtful conversations about both the opportunities and challenges this emerging technology presents.

As the group grows older, they will have the opportunity to take part in the National Articulation competition, where students present on a work of art, architecture or an artefact that has inspired them. In a recent regional final, one student from Eltham College spoke about a piece of art generated by AI, a clear sign of how rapidly the world and the nature of creativity itself is changing.
