German and Geography Students Explore Hamburg

Year 9 to Year 11 German and Geography students began the Easter holidays with a four-day trip to Hamburg, Germany’s second-largest city, set around a central lake and the River Elbe.

After a guided tour of the city centre on the first day, the group enjoyed close encounters with vast ships in the port and gained an insight into German engineering at the Airbus factory. They also took in panoramic views from a repurposed Second World War flak tower and from the Elbphilharmonie, the city’s landmark concert hall which opened in 2017.

Further visits included the Internationales Maritimes Museum, home to the world’s largest private maritime collection, and Miniatur Wunderland, the largest model railway in the world. A particularly memorable experience was Dialogue in the Dark, where students navigated a series of scenarios in complete darkness, guided by a visually impaired host and relying on touch and sound alone.

The trip concluded with a ferry crossing of the river to see MJ, performed in both German and English. Staff were very impressed by the students’ enthusiasm and engagement throughout, as well as their confident use of German when ordering food and shopping. All had a great time.
