Sailing with “Rough Winds”
For their last scholarship session of the year ( GCSEs approach) members of the Year 11 Colloquium, led by English teacher Mr George Evans, examined two Shakespearean sonnets.
Focusing mainly on “Shall I compare thee…” (Sonnet 18), Mr Evans skilfully led the students through an examination of the sonnet, concentrating on themes, mood, imagery, structure and use of language. The students made a wide range of excellent points and drew subtle comparisons with sonnet 130 “my mistress’ eyes…”.
It was a fitting way to round off their five years in the Scholarship Programme. Parting, however, is not such sweet sorrow, as over 20 of the group will be going on a trip to the Midlands after GCSEs, and, of course, the Scholarship programme continues in Sixth Form.
