Year 10 Geographers Head Out to Kent

On 19th May, 86 Year 10 Geography students headed to the River Darent in Kent for their iGCSE fieldwork investigation. Three coaches set off bright and early and, despite traffic delays, narrow country lanes and some on-and-off rain, we had a great day.

It was brilliant to see such enthusiasm, resilience and teamwork as students carried out a range of river fieldwork activities. They approached the day with real positivity, and it was lovely to see so many enjoying the experience together, even when the weather was less than ideal!

During the trip, students were able to see clear differences in land use between the upper and lower course of the river, travelling from Westerham through to the confluence with the River Thames. The visit also linked well to our Urban Environments topic, particularly when passing through the rural-urban fringe and industrial areas near the river mouth.

We were especially impressed by the quality of students’ evaluation skills. Many gave thoughtful comments about the strengths and limitations of their data collection methods and suggested sensible improvements they could make in future investigations.

This term also coincides with the Geographical Association’s National Festival of Fieldwork, which celebrates the value of learning Geography outside the classroom. We are delighted to support the festival and give students the opportunity to develop their fieldwork skills in real-world environments.

Well done, Year 10, you represented the school brilliantly. We are already looking forward to the next fieldwork trip to Lewisham later this term for the Human Geography investigation.
